I was on a business trip with a co-worker. We had to check out of our
hotel before work because we were leaving at the end of the day. At the
Federal Building she had to unpack her suitcase to show the security
guard that what they saw on the scanner was really a hair dryer. Of
course this is with a week's worth of dirty laundry...
>You mean like your little war of independence was a civil war?
>
Based upon what I was taught while a history major:

A Civil War is when one government temporarily becomes two or more, and
they war with each other.

A Revolution is when one government becomes two or more, and go to war,
with at least two of the governments surviving at the close of hostilities.

A Rebellion is when subjects of one government try to replace it by force.

A Coup is when a Government is replaced by another government. Sometimes
the result of a Civil War, sometimes politics alone.

Ob Trav: The Solomani Rim War is definitely not a civil war. It resulted
from two extant governments having their ties severed with force. The
Confed was (pre SRW) the Solomani Autonomous Region. It was a subject
government... and it was, in a sense, a rebellion, but not really a civil
war.

Ob US: The US War of independance was a revolution... The two governments
that resulted have remained independant.... but it was a rebellion as well.

Ahh, the joys of the innaccuracies of the English language, and the prolems
of Jargon...
Ah, so _that's_ where the game "Liftoff" (Task Force
Games) got the probe names from... for those who don't
know, it's a board game of The Race To The Moon... you
have to spend money on research, conduct test flights,
etc, and get to be the yanks, the russkies, the
europeans or asians...
I played it a bit, we used to love trouncing the
yanks, hehe
Of course, we had to rename the astronauts they gave
us, we loved having "Paul Hogan" be the first man on
the moon, steeping out and saying, "Strewth, mate, it
looks like a dirty beach."
I would expect that the IN is not the only recipient of Academy graduates. I
would expect many, if not most, to become officers in the Colonial and
System Navies. Except for the Academy at Capital, which would primarily be
limited to members of the aristocracy (In Traveller this means Nobles and
Rich Kids from the Megacorps.) I would also expect that certain Academies
have reputations for excellence beyond their own sector, perhaps even being
good enough to lure students from other Domains. This would depend on their
ability to attract well known and admired ex-IN and Colonial Navy Officers
and Chief Petty Officers as instructors. The best will even have their own
ships for training purposes.
If it can not be fixed, paint it.
If it can not be painted, polish it.
I suspect it's more of a homogenous society issue than a temperature issue.
It's easier to kill those who are not like us than those who are like us.
When Main Street was WASP, violence was low, gun violence ***on Main
Street*** was low. We won't go into gun and other violence in the dock or
other districts. Columbine (sp?): the preps were outsiders and killed member
of groups from which they were either excluded or feared, the popular
athletes and the born again Christians.
To ramble on I saw an interview of a Mafia informer, Basco I think it was.
The interviewer asked him if he was sorry about the men he killed, because
they had families, wives, children. His answer? "Why should I care? I don't
know them." When we know our neighbors, when they're our friends, we don't
shoot them. When we don't know anyone who lives on our block, in our
building, on our cul-de-sac, then it's easy to see how someone already prone
to violence might find it even easier to "take out" some one "He doesn't
know." Plus it's harder to hell who the little bastards are who would have
no trouble doing it.
Of course none of this matters to people who don't think anyone's life has
value anyway.
How to fix the problem? Short of doing it the Zhodani way, I don't know.
Yep, and it has been touted that in theory, Australia could have been a
leader in space technology as some of the equipment designed and made
Downunder for Woomera, was more state of the art than ANYONE else in the
world had. But the Pom's wanted it broken up and it was sold to the U.S.
and France mainly... However, not knowing to much more on the subject, said
My character was an Imperial Naval Officer and some of his interests
involved ancient Terran music. When he approached a group of Elvis
neophytes, they bopped him upside the head and took him away. The next thing
he knew he was exposed to constant Elvis music videos, gyrating men and
women, and he couldn't get away. Three weeks later an Imperial commando team
rescued my character and the Navy sent him to a deprogramming camp. This all
happened during character generation! As a result, he lost the skill
opportunities for one year!
Smegging right it's flamebait! Excuse me, but
similarity with small differences causes more violence
than _great_ differences. Just look at the
prtoestant-christian bollocks in Northern Ireland, the
Sunni-Shiite conflicts, the various Sino-Soviet wars,
China's invasion of Vietnam, Vietnam's invasion of
Cambodia, etc etc etc.
It may be psychologically and socially _easier_ to
kill those who are very very different, but the
differences can often cause puzzlement rather than
aggression. Aggression comes from offence at their
_slight_ differences. If someone is _completely_
different, we'll just concludethey're too weird to
understand, or bonkers, and won't get angry. But if
they're _almost_ the same, but not quite, we'll be
offended at the difference, eg "those buggers over
there in East Belfast believe in Jesus, but don't like
the Pope, how dare they?!!!" as opposed to, "those
weirdoes in Beijing neverheard of Jesus."

Similarity, and understanding one another, can cause
hideous conflict.I quote Douglas Adams, "and thus the
poor Babel Fish, by enabling every species in the
universe to communicate with one another, went on to
be responsible formore wars and genocide than any
other thing in history."
Did he also get drunk, and wake up married to a hooker
ObTrav: what are the marriage laws in the Imperium?
Are they all local, planet based? As well as helping
chase you for your ship mortgage payments (yeah,
right) will the IN hunt down those skipping out on
alimony payments? How many wives/husbands can you
have? One in every port?;)
I think there is something *VERY* wierd about the email software he's using.
I've been unable to figure out why, but every message he sends ends listed
as having been sent on the same day in April 2000 by Eudora 4. Despite the
fact he's sent some of them on different days, and there is no sign of that
date in the message headers that I've been able to find.

Hmmm, wierd results when recieving messages with Eudora, and mystery
attachements. Must be using a MS Product.

OTOH, a couple of his posts have been pretty interesting, and I'd have
probably missed them if not for this irritating email behavior.

Of course. Aussies wouldnever go anywhere without cold
beer (southern hemisphere strength, please!).
The yanks took golf clubs, but the Aussies would leave
behind crushed cans of VB/XXXX/Cooper's....

I wonder if the HMASS Melbourne would be better
piloted than the HMAS Melbourne was (which Aussie
ship, for ten points, sank three ships in its career,
two Aussie and one USA?)
For an interesting statement on this, read Brian Puckett's statement that he
sent to the California Governer at
http://www.guntruths.com/Puckett/why_i_will_not_obey_california.htm,
specifically the guns covered by the 2nd Amendment. If we did things TO THE
LETTER AND INTENT OF THE CONSTITUTION, then every *law abiding* gun owner
would own fully automatic weapons.

Best,
Jesse

Always wondered, though, if Jefferson would've written
the 2nd Amendment if there'd been around AK-47s
instead of just muskets that took a minute or two to
load and were lucky to hit a man at a hundred yards!
Anywya, are you sure that "the right to bear amrs, the
right to form state militias, shall not be infringed",
doesn't mean, "the right to bear arms, _that is_, the
right to form state militias, shall not be infringed"?
I *wondered* why I never heard of Woomera being used for anything.
That *really* sucks. Shit, it wouldn't have hurt to just mothball the
Launch sites. Even "Abandoned in Place" would have been better.

They found a rocket last year just poking out of the ground near Woomera -
almost completely vertical.

Funny.

BTW; I dunno about other RPGing Aussies, but I always got a thrill when we
got a mention in games thanks to places like Woomera - I think Ringworld by
Chaosium had us Australians as space fightin' heroes thanks to the facility.
Do any AUST's remember crazy Joh from QLD with his plans for the world's
biggest spaceport at Cape York?

Oh yeah. RE the Southpark Episode with Starvin' Marvin and the spaceship.
Didn't you love how the CIA said 'We hope that no backward country gets a
hold of that vessel' then it cut to Australia.
I'm still living down the Simpson's episode; "Coff-ee" "Be Er" etc.
